Fully Funded Scholarships for Iraqi Students 2027/2028
Iraqi students have several strong scholarship opportunities for the 2027/2028 intake, especially in Europe and Asia. The best options are usually Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum, Germany’s DAAD scholarships, Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, Italy’s MAECI scholarships, France’s Eiffel Scholarship, South Korea’s Global Korea Scholarship, Japan’s MEXT Scholarship and selected scholarships in Spain and Slovakia. The key challenge is not finding scholarships. The key challenge is choosing the right ones based on your academic level, English level, GPA, work experience, field of study and documents. Many Iraqi students apply late, use generic motivation letters, miss the legalisation or translation requirements, or apply to scholarships where their profile is not competitive. A better strategy is to prepare six to nine months before the deadline.
Best scholarships for Iraqi students
1. Stipendium Hungaricum, Hungary
This is one of the most important scholarships for Iraqi students because Iraq was included in the official 2026/2027 full-time Sending Partner list. The 2026/2027 call included both the Republic of Iraq and the Kurdish Region of Iraq among eligible Sending Partners for full-time programmes. Stipendium Hungaricum can cover bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s, doctoral and non-degree programmes, depending on the agreement between Hungary and the Sending Partner. In the 2026/2027 call, the programme offered tuition-free education, monthly stipend, accommodation contribution, medical insurance and student ID. This scholarship is especially attractive for Iraqi students interested in medicine, engineering, agriculture, economics, computer science, business, public health and natural sciences. The one-tier master’s route can be important for fields such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, architecture or veterinary medicine. The expected timeline for 2027/2028 will likely be similar to the latest call:
| Period | Action |
|---|---|
| November 2026 | Read the new call and check Iraqi eligibility |
| November to December 2026 | Choose programmes and contact the Sending Partner |
| December 2026 to January 2027 | Submit the online application |
| January to February 2027 | Technical check and nomination stage |
| March to May 2027 | University evaluation and exams |
| June to July 2027 | Final results |
| July to August 2027 | Visa and travel |
Iraqi students should check whether they must submit documents both through the Tempus online system and through the Iraqi Sending Partner authority. The official call notes that Sending Partners may have different deadlines and requirements, and applicants are advised to contact their responsible authority early.
2. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters
Erasmus Mundus is one of the best scholarships for Iraqi students who already have a bachelor’s degree and want a master’s in Europe. It is open to top-ranked students worldwide, and the scholarship may cover participation costs, travel, visa and living allowance. This is especially good for students in engineering, environmental science, marine science, data science, public policy, development, economics, law, education, sustainability, health, urban studies and international relations. Iraqi students should apply to Erasmus Mundus if they have:
- Strong academic record
- Good English
- Clear motivation
- Strong recommendation letters
- A degree related to the programme
- A specific career plan
The biggest mistake is writing a general motivation letter. Erasmus applications need to show why the exact consortium, exact mobility path and exact curriculum match your goals.
3. DAAD scholarships, Germany
Germany is one of the best destinations for Iraqi students, especially for master’s and PhD. DAAD offers many scholarship programmes, but the most relevant for experienced Iraqi applicants is often DAAD EPOS. DAAD EPOS supports graduates from developing and newly industrialised countries with at least two years of professional experience. It can fund a postgraduate or master’s degree, and in exceptional cases a doctoral degree, at a German university. This is very useful for Iraqi students working in engineering, development, climate, environment, water, energy, public health, economics, governance, public policy or education. The work experience requirement is important. Internships usually do not replace formal professional experience unless the specific programme accepts them.
4. Global Korea Scholarship, South Korea
The Global Korea Scholarship, or GKS, is one of the strongest fully funded scholarships in Asia. It supports undergraduate and graduate study in South Korea. For the 2026 graduate cycle, the Korean government planned to invite 2,000 international students, and applicants had to apply either through a Korean embassy in their country of citizenship or directly to a designated university. For Iraqi students, GKS can be excellent for engineering, technology, robotics, Korean studies, public policy, international relations, business and science. The scholarship is generous, but competition is strong. Iraqi students should check the Korean Embassy announcements and the Study in Korea GKS notices.
5. MEXT Scholarship, Japan
MEXT is the Japanese government scholarship. It is open to nationals of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan, and the application is normally handled through Japanese embassies or Japanese universities. Study in Japan explains that recruitment for those arriving in Japan in April 2027 or September/October 2027 was made between April and May of the previous year, with first screening between May and July. For Iraqi students planning the 2028 intake, the embassy track may open around April to May 2027, depending on the embassy. This means preparation should begin by January 2027. MEXT is good for undergraduate, master’s, PhD, research, teacher training, Japanese studies, college of technology and specialised training categories, depending on the call.
6. France Eiffel Scholarship
Eiffel is excellent but highly competitive. It is for master’s and PhD applicants. Students do not apply directly to Campus France. A French institution must submit the application. For the 2026 campaign, the institutional deadline to Campus France was 8 January 2026, and results were published from 30 March 2026. Iraqi students interested in France should contact universities early, ideally between September and November before the deadline.
7. Italy MAECI and DSU
Italy is attractive for Iraqi students because it combines moderate tuition, government scholarships and regional aid. The MAECI 2026/2027 deadline was 26 March 2026 through the Study in Italy portal. Regional DSU scholarships can also be very useful, but Iraqi students must prepare family income, family composition and asset documents. These often need translation, legalisation and sometimes consular processing.
Which scholarship is best for Iraqi students by level?
| Level | Best options |

| Engineering | Germany, Hungary, Korea, Japan, Italy |
| Climate and environment | DAAD, Erasmus Mundus, Finland waivers, France, Germany |
| Business and policy | France, Germany, Spain, Erasmus Mundus, Korea |
Documents Iraqi students should prepare early
Iraqi students should not wait for the call to open. Prepare these documents early:
- Passport valid for at least two years
- Graduation certificate
- Academic transcript
- English test, if needed
- Recommendation letters
- CV
- Motivation letter
- Work certificates
- Proof of employment, if needed
- Translated documents
- Legalised documents, especially for Italy and some visa processes
- Research proposal for PhD
- Portfolio for design, architecture or arts
Common mistakes by Iraqi applicants
The most common mistakes are:
- Applying too late.
- Not checking whether Iraq is eligible for that year.
- Using the same motivation letter for every scholarship.
- Choosing programmes that do not match the previous degree.
- Submitting weak recommendation letters.
- Forgetting the Sending Partner step for Stipendium Hungaricum.
- Not preparing legalised documents early.
- Applying only to famous countries and ignoring realistic options.
Recommended plan for Iraqi students
Start with three categories:
- One high-competition scholarship: Erasmus Mundus, GKS, MEXT or Eiffel.
- One realistic country scholarship: Stipendium Hungaricum, MAECI or DAAD EPOS.
- One backup option: university tuition waiver, Italy DSU or low-tuition public university.
This creates a balanced plan instead of depending on one scholarship. Need help applying? We can help Iraqi students choose the right countries, check eligibility, prepare documents, write motivation letters, build a scholarship calendar and review applications before submission. ---
