🛂 Student visa — Spain

Updated June 2026
Spain is a strong destination for business, sciences, Spanish language, tourism, international relations, and students who want a southern European lifestyle with moderate costs compared with Paris or Norway.

Who needs this visa?

Non-EU students studying in Spain for more than 90 days usually need an authorisation of stay for studies and, depending on where they apply, a student visa. Spain's migration ministry describes the long-duration stay for studies as an authorisation allowing a stay of more than 90 days for higher studies and related activities.

Main documents

Typical documents include admission to an authorised institution, passport, visa form, proof of financial means, health insurance, criminal record certificate for long stays, medical certificate where required, accommodation proof, and proof of fee payment. Requirements vary by consulate.

Application process

There are two main routes. Students outside Spain usually apply through the Spanish consulate. Some students already legally in Spain may apply from inside Spain if they meet the timing and legal-entry conditions. After approval, students complete the TIE/residence card process if their stay requires it.

Working while studying

Spain's student rules changed under the newer immigration regulation. The University of Barcelona summarises that this type of visa allows work for a maximum of 30 hours per week, and it refers to Royal Decree 1155/2024. Students must ensure the work is compatible with their studies and that their specific authorisation allows it.

After graduation

The current Spanish migration ministry page states that the residence authorisation for job search or starting a business allows graduates to remain in Spain for 24 months, non-extendable. The same official page states that during this job-search residence, the holder is not authorised to work until they obtain the appropriate work authorisation.

Best for

Spain is best for students interested in business, science, Spanish-speaking careers, tourism, education, and European lifestyle. It is also attractive for students who may later use Spanish language and networks for careers across Europe and Latin America.
